Mangaluru, September 10, 2026: Ahead of the Karnataka Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held in Mangaluru on September 18, the Jai Tulunad (Reg.) Kudla Unit has urged Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) General Secretary Mithun Rai to put pressure on the state government to take a historic decision on granting official language status to Tulu.

The delegation requested Mithun Rai to raise the issue with the government and urge the Cabinet to seriously consider the long-standing aspirations of the Tulu-speaking people. The organization stated that the Cabinet meeting being held in Mangaluru provides an important opportunity for the government to take a historic step towards the recognition and development of the Tulu language.

The Jai Tulunad (Reg.) Kudla Unit also submitted additional demands concerning the development and promotion of the Tulu language and script.

One of the demands was that the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy should issue certificates to students who successfully complete Tulu Script learning and training programmes. The organization stated that formal certification would encourage more students to learn and practice the Tulu script and would provide recognition to their efforts.

The delegation also urged the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy to continue and complete its work related to the Unicode encoding of the Tulu script. According to the organization, the Unicode-related work remains pending, and it expressed concern that the delay has affected the wider digital development and accessibility of the Tulu script.

Jai Tulunad (Reg.) urged the government and the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy to give priority to these issues and take concrete steps for the preservation, promotion, digitization and wider development of the Tulu language and script.

The delegation included Rajashree Chandrashekar, President of Jai Tulunad (Reg.) Kudla Unit; Sharathraj Alankar, Secretary of the Kudla Unit; Bhavishya S Kudla, Treasurer of Jai Tulunad (Reg.) Kudla Unit; Uday Poonja, Tulu Script Teacher, Former President, Founder Member of Jai Tulunad (Reg.); Kiran Tuluve, Founder Member of Jai Tulunad (Reg.) and Secretary Teacher; and Vinay Rai Kudla, Member of Jai Tulunad (Reg.).

The organization expressed hope that the government would consider these demands seriously and take meaningful decisions that would contribute to the future development and recognition of Tulu.
